Bulky Items - Break these things down as much as you can. Say you have a big cabinet thats made of wood. There is a lot of space being wasted in the cabinet itself when not broken down. A broken down cabinet takes up much less space than one thats still intact.
Stack Items - Think of loading a dumpster like playing a game of Tetris. The neater you can stack the items in the dumpster the more stuff you will get in he dumpster. It might be faster to just throw everything in but if you have a lot to fit in then take your time and stack it.
Utilize the Door - When you rent a dumpster we will do our best to keep it out enough to be able to open the door to walk things in on the roll off dumpsters. You can save a lot of energy by walking the items in as opposed to throwing them in over the side. We are not responsible for any injuries that happen when you are inside the dumpster.
Prohibited List - Don't forget to look at the prohibited list of items that cannot go in the dumpster. Many of these items are declined by the landfill from waste haulers. If they are in a dumpster then a waste hauler may get fined or has to pay a third party to dispose of these items. These costs get passed back onto the client who rented the dumpster. An example of very common items that are not accepted by the local landfills are televisions. Tv's cost a waste hauler anywhere from $2.00 a pound up to $8.00 or more per pound.
Start with Flat Items First – Load large, flat items like boards, doors, or plywood first. These items can serve as a base layer and help you make the most of the bottom of the dumpster without wasting space.
Compress Loose Items – For items like cardboard boxes, plastic, or other compressible materials, be sure to break them down or crush them to maximize space. This is especially important for light but bulky items that take up unnecessary room.
Fill Gaps with Smaller Items – As you stack larger items, make sure to fill gaps and voids with smaller items. This helps to avoid wasted space between larger objects.
Avoid Overfilling – While it may be tempting to pile items higher than the dumpster walls, this can lead to surcharges or extra fees if the dumpster exceeds its weight capacity or isn’t transportable. Aim to keep everything below the top of the dumpster.
Distribute Weight Evenly – Load heavy items first and distribute them evenly throughout the dumpster. This helps to prevent the dumpster from tipping during pickup and ensures that weight limits are evenly spread.
Bag Loose Debris
– Bagging small loose items like debris, dirt, or small trash can help keep the space organized and prevent the mess from spilling over or blowing away. It also makes it easier to fill in empty spaces with bags.
Recycle or Donate Before You Toss – Before loading everything into the dumpster, consider sorting out items that can be recycled or donated, such as electronics, furniture, or appliances. This reduces the volume of waste and saves space for non-recyclable items.
